This is a background image of a hand drawn map of Highfields. There are seven buildings and four road traffic style signposts that constitute the links to the pages. The four signposts lead to four Flash movies.
I've put links on this page to the new window pages that would normally open from the map page. Here they will not open a new window but will go straight to the page. There is no navigation 'back' other than the 'back' button or your reader's 'back' function. So don't click 'close window' as that will close the only window!
The links are "sign links" and "building links"
Sign Links
Sign 1 is a hand making a "stop" signal in a red triangular sign.
The movie is a short scene of a boy being chased in school. He finally runs into his older friend who saves him. There is then a message "No matter what your cultural background, friends will always be there for you" at the end.
Sign 2 is a mobile phone on a blue rectangle.
The movie shows a drawn mobile phone that depicts faces as they say "hi" in different ways and different languages (This one is worth loading the movie for to hear the voices). The text for the movie goes, in order:
Kiddah
Ciao
Bonjour
Ke-i
Hola
Heavy
Oright
As Salamu ' alaykum
What's goin on?
Kako Si
Then the phone spins round (with siren sound) and we see the screen of a real phone saying:
"Message recieved - read.
Communication, the next generation"
Sign 3 is a person in sillouette standing with their arms out wide.
The movie shows 2 girls in western dress (one asian girl has an arsenal football shirt on - booooo) and asian dress(?)
The text reads, with the pics in parenthesis:
This is us (posing/hugging in western clothing)
and this is us (shown in traditional dress)
culture vs fashion (dress and arsenal shirt on coat hangers)
no contest (graphic of the text repeated. no contest, no contest etc)
dress the way you feel (group shot of 10 young people from the school posing on stage)
NB: It may or may not be an arsenal shirt, but you can never be too careful
Sign 4 is a football in a blue circle
The movie begins with an asian girl standing against a wall, she is wearing denim jeans and jacket and a "t"-shirt with "Urban 9" on it. The text says
"Do you know who I am"
Can you tell what kind of person I am"
There are two buttons, one for "play" and one for "pause" similar to vcr control buttons.(the background sound is general playground hubbub)
The play button takes you to the next scene (the pause works but why use it????)(and I made the move...)
Next scene
The girl is in footy kit now (cue "Jaws" style pulsing sound effect) and looking on at some boys playing football in a school play ground, then she's closer, then she's playing, then...she scores! "GOAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!"(huge cheers)
We then return to the original picture but the text now says "I can be whatever I want to be"
The buildings are all rollover links to little personal stories. The descriptions are within the alt tags of the pictures where necessary. I'll describe the buildings here and repeat the links - the navigation may get a little wierd (no new windows this way) but it should be better this way?
Building links
The tower block near the train station
The terrace near the bottom of the map
The three storey house near the top
The Gallery
The odd shaped house with the red roof near East Park road at the bottom.
The house with the Victorian style blue bays
The house with the pink windows
